Radio Review: Looper

This week I had the joy of seeing Looper. Needless to say, I was properly hyped up for this one and I was pleasantly not disappointed. Looper is that unique blend of smart sci-fi, good action and great acting that you have to look long and hard for. I had a slight problem with getting over Gorden-Levitt’s nose job, but trust me, if you call yourself a sci-fi fan, go see this! I give it a solid dice roll 5.

Radio Review: Lawless

With moonshine, bootleggers, gangsters and Tommy-guns, Lawless is still not just a prohibition-film. Set in rural Franklin, it often feels like a western. Even if you can’t stand Shia LeBeouf, you have to see this film for Tom Hardy’s performance as the “immortal” Forrest Bondurant. Part Clint Eastwood, part Jesse James, but with none of the charm, he presents us with a unique and fascinating character.

Dice roll: 4

Hysterical

Movie: Hysteria (2011)

A movie about the invention of the vibrator. That sounds like a movie that will try desperately to be awkward-funny or too serious, and fail either way. Luckily, this movie is just genuinely funny while reminding us how far women have come, without stereotyping and mocking the “crazy, prudish feminist” type. It’s also, for me, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s best role (and yes, I mean including The Dark Knight).

Prometheus (Finally!)

I finally got to see Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s prequel-but-not-really to Alien this weekend. Even though I had been looking forward to this movie for a long time, I tried to keep my expectations “open”, meaning I had high hopes, but tried to not let those hopes wander in a fixed direction. I think that philosophy served me well. Those who expected yet another “they end up in a closed space with chest-busting aliens and get picked off one by one” will be disappointed.

Since the movie has been out for quite some time, and the fans have already seen it, this review contains spoilers.

The Avengers

“Some Assembly Required”

Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: the First Avenger (and, if you’re feeling masochistic, the first Hulk movie). Five films that need to be viewed to truly appreciate the amazing, and perhaps unprecedented, achievement that is The Avengers. It’s been over a week since its premier, so this review might contain spoilers. Before I went in I tweeted asking if one could be disappointed that a movie so completely lived up to one’s expectations. If you like to write scratching reviews, then yes, but I simply bathed in the glorious fangirl hum of satisfaction.

Good things come to those who wait

Movie: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

A true spy movie that gives us nothing cheaply, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is packed so full of talent that its only true loss is that it can’t give enough screen time to all the actors. The first half might be a tad confusing and for some it might appear slow and bloated (or maybe even pretentious or Oscar baiting) but for the patient movie-goer it’s a riveting portrayal of a group of ordinary men in extraordinary jobs.
