Captain America: Civil War

teamsvscivilwarposterAfter the belly flop of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, I wasn’t feeling very confident in comic book movies. There were a few reasons to maintain my optimism. In my ranking of favourite comic book movies, I think Marvel holds at least five top spots. Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn’t anything to jump for joy about, but it kept the pace up, and introduced new interesting characters. Still, I was feeling more than a little apprehensive. Would Marvel’s incredible franchise finally crumble? Would my interest finally exhaust itself? No, and hell no, are the short answers.

The story of Civil War unfolds organically. The Avengers are under metaphorical fire from the international community after several civilians were killed and injured during an incident in Lagos. The US government, along with 116 other countries, want to put the Avengers under the control of the UN through the “Sokovia Accords”. Lines are drawn between those who sign the agreement, and those who want to remain independent. At the same time, Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier, is being targeted.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (spoiler-ish review)

avengers-age-of-ultronThe Marvel Cinematic Universe is steadily becoming comic-levels of complicated. It’s come to the point where I feel every review should begin with a synopsis of where we are in the timeline. Right now, it’s enough to say that we are post-Winter Soldier by some months. This review does assume you’ve seen pretty much everything that’s out (though I’m not going to spoil Daredevil for you).

The team is hunting down Loki’s staff, which we last saw being played with in a Hydra research facility. We have to assume Thor came back to Midgard with Odin!Loki’s blessing, which begs the question – did Loki as Odin order Thor to retrieve it? Probably. The reason he needs it become clear, and fans have already suspected it. But before it can be returned to Asgard the Avengers have to deal with the artificial intelligence that spawns from Tony’s tinkering: Ultron.

Thor: The Dark World

the-new-thor-the-dark-world-poster-looks-exactly-like-the-one-for-iron-man-3I know I’m late to the party, but it has taken me this long to get my head around this movie. So let’s see what I’ve concluded after two weeks.

Thor: The Dark World takes place almost exactly where The Avengers left off. Loki is hauled back in chains to face Odin and sentenced to life in prison. Before that, however, we get a big, action-packed flashback to Odin’s father, who battled the Dark Elves – beings who ruled “before” the universe as we know it existed. They want nothing more to go back to that status quo, so their leader Malekith tries to use a mysterious, dark-matter like, substance called ether. He fails and goes into hiding. Until Jane Foster manages to stumble upon the substance and wake it up. Now the substance is inside her, and Malekith will stop at nothing to get it out.
