Double Radio Review: Hotel Transylvania + Dredd

Another week, another double radio review! Follow the links to the full reviews at RadioRevolt.no

Hotel Transylvania 3D: They’re monsters, but they’re actually really nice! Not the most original of concepts (I remember reading about nice vampires in first grade), and not very well executed. The animation is far from inspired, and the jokes are either out-dated or just not that funny. The film has some warmth, but just let your kids re-watch Monsters Inc. if they want nice monsters.

Dice roll: 2

Dredd 3D: Based on the comic, not the Stallon-movie, Dredd offers up more than its fair share of blood and gore. It’s a ballet of slow-motion carnage as Judge Dredd fights his way though a Mega-Skyscraper ruled over by the deranged “queen-pin” Ma-Ma. I had mixed feelings all the way through, but it’s the lack of any sort of irony that made me roll my eyes just one time too many. Watch it if you’re a fan of pure, unadulterated action with the thinnest of plots.

Dice roll: 3

Double Radio Review: Le Prénom + 90 Minutes

I got lucky and sat through two press-screenings on Monday!

Le Prénom: A French film full of Amelie-style randomness and absurdity, but with a nice core of engaging human interactions. Set mostly at a dinner party between five friends, the tension escalates steadily throughout the evening, beginning with one of them wanting to name their new-born Adolf.

90 Minutes: This Norwegian film consists of three independent stories edited together to form a study on men who do violence to women. Not all of the stories have the same level of impact, and I think it depends on how much violence you are used to in films and how cynical you are. Be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart.

Both films run off with solid dice rolls of four. Follow the links to read and listen to the reviews at Radio Revolt!

Less Than Shameful

Movie: Shame (2011)

Watch out: here comes the smolder.

When Tiger Woods has it, it’s a joke, but sex addiction is no laughing matter in Shame, a Steve McQueen movie that needs Michael Fassbender’s tortured face to work. The man is one of the most interesting actors working right now. That’s why it’s such a shame the camera man always seems to be at the wrong place at the wrong moment.

Radio Review: Polisse

This week I put on my francophile hat to watch Polisse, a cop movie about ordinary cops who have to deal with pedophiles on a regular basis. We get to know these people rather well after a few poor editing choices, but the movie just doesn’t leave enough of an impression. I gave it a 4 on viewing, but it hasn’t aged well in my mind, so it’s a dice roll 3 for Polisse.

The Film with the uncomfortable scenes

Movie: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011, aka the American version)

We continue my quest to watch the Oscar winners with the remaking of the Swedish hit, based on the novel by Stieg Larsson. If you don’t remember which Oscar it won, that’s because it was Best Film Editing, which I actually don’t agree with, but more on that later. Before we get to the review, we need full disclosure: I have not seen the Swedish version, nor have I read the books.
