The Croods Review

the-croodsApparently, I have an incurable prejudice against a certain type of animated film. Time and time again I am proven wrong, but it has still taken me this long to finally see The Croods. Movies like Megamind, Madagascar 1, 2 and 3, and Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 were all initially dismissed (though I can hardly be blamed for the last one – honestly, Jack Black as a kung fu fighting Panda? Anyone would be suspicious). None of them are without faults, but all of them provide a good time, surprising depth, and above all clear evidence that a lot of love went into them.

Despite being wrong so often, I wasn’t excited at all to see The Croods, but then it popped up on Netflix on a Sunday night, and I am glad it did.

Norwegian Connections in Frozen

Frozen-movie-posterI have finally watched Frozen, and as a Norwegian I had a pretty great time finding some of the Norwegian elements in the film. The tourist website, Visit Norway is already using the film to do a bit of promotion. There is no doubt the film has a lot of Scandinavian elements, and I thought I’d catalogue just a few details I caught on my first viewing.

Favourite Movie Scores for Studying

With the semester almost over and no more radio shows until next year, my time with movies mostly consists of listening to them while I read. So, to procrastinate a bit more productively, I thought I’d share my favourite movie scores for studying. Of course, there are other scores I like when I’m not studying that are a bit more upbeat. You won’t find the theme to Indiana Jones or Star Wars here. Anything by Howard Shore is also a given, and not mentioned below.

Second Place in Scandinavian Film Championship: the best and the worst movies

I am a proud member of Team Trondheim, one of 18 teams that competed in the Scandinavian Film Championship last weekend, and well into this week. Despite serious misgivings on my part, we went all the way to the silver medal, though sadly we didn’t get an actual medal, just the well-deserved prize of sleep.

Old review: Brave

Since I didn’t get to see any film premiers this week, I thought I’d review a film I saw a while ago and didn’t write about. Pixar’s Brave. 

Set in a fantasy version of Scotland, Brave stars the young princess Merida (voice by Kelly MacDonald) who is the rebellious type. Although she has a good relationship with her father Fergus (instantly recognizable as Billy Connolly), and her three rascal brothers, she does have problems with her manner-obsessed mother (Emma Thompson). Hating the idea of being forced to marry one of the sons of the three other clans, she comes across a witch who offers a spell to change her fate by changing her mother. If you know Disney you will immediately know that some things are too good to be true, which is exactly the case when the mother is indeed changed, into a bear.
